OpenAI Ships GPT-5.6: Three Tiers, Lower Cost Per Result

The short answer

The GPT-5.6 family (Sol, Terra, Luna) is now generally available — and the pricing tiers matter more to business owners than the benchmarks. The headline isn't the benchmarks — it's cost per completed task.

What happened

OpenAI released the GPT-5.6 family to general availability on July 9, 2026: Sol (the flagship, $5/$30 per million tokens), Terra (balanced, $2.50/$15), and Luna (fastest and cheapest, $1/$6). Sol posts state-of-the-art results on coding and agentic benchmarks — 88.8% on Terminal-Bench 2.1 and 90.4% on BrowseComp — while using fewer tokens than previous frontier models.

The structural change is the tier system itself. Instead of one giant model, OpenAI now maintains three "durable capability tiers" that evolve independently, plus an "ultra" mode that coordinates multiple agents in parallel for the hardest tasks.

What it means for your business

The headline isn't the benchmarks — it's cost per completed task. Most business automation (answering customer questions, drafting follow-ups, summarizing calls) runs perfectly well on the cheap tiers. Luna-class pricing means an AI agent that handles hundreds of customer conversations a month costs dollars, not hundreds of dollars, in model fees. If a vendor is charging you flagship-model prices for routine automation, this release is your negotiating leverage.
