82% of Small Businesses Now Use AI — Median of Five Tools Each
The short answer
SBE Council survey data shows AI has moved from experiment to standard practice, with a clear "stack" pattern emerging. If you're not using AI yet, you're now in the minority — but the survey also hints at the failure mode: tool sprawl.

What happened
The SBE Council's 2026 Small Business Tech Use Survey reports that 82% of small business employers have invested in AI tools, with the typical business running a median of five tools across research, content, automation, customer engagement, and financial management. 93% of AI-using businesses plan to keep investing, and 62% plan to increase spending — one of the clearest ROI signals in the data.
A notable trend inside the numbers: 65% of small businesses are using or planning AI-supported pricing tools, an area that was almost exclusively enterprise territory two years ago.
What it means for your business
If you're not using AI yet, you're now in the minority — but the survey also hints at the failure mode: tool sprawl. Five tools is a median, not a target. The businesses getting results pick one high-impact pain point (missed calls, slow follow-up, invoice chasing), fix it properly, measure, then add the next tool. A pile of disconnected subscriptions is how AI spend turns into overhead instead of leverage.
